Respiratory pigments

Respiratory pigments are colored organic substances in animal and plant cells that are involved in the transport of oxygen or tissue respiration. In humans and animals, oxygen from the respiratory organs to the tissues is carried out by the iron-containing respiratory pigment hemoglobin (see) blood, in muscle tissues myoglobin is the oxygen reservoir. Among the respiratory pigments involved in oxidative processes (see Biological oxidation) are cytochromes (see Enzymes ).
